Median employer contributions by state, plan year 2024

Filings received through . A program makes this page from the Form 5500 files with fixed sentence rules.

In plan year 2024, the median employer contribution was highest in the District of Columbia ($4,638) and lowest in Puerto Rico ($1,020).

The figure is for each active participant of a defined contribution plan with 100 or more participants.

The national median was $2,172.

The median was above the national median in 22 of 52 states and territories with 50 plans or more that report the figure.

While applicable plans are required to file a Form 5500 or Form 5500-SF annually, multiple filings may exist for a plan’s single form year if a plan amends their original filing or if a duplicate filing was erroneously submitted.

The dataset listed as “Latest” includes only the latest filing received for a plan with a filing status of “FILING_RECEIVED”.

In plain words: this page shows the latest filing on record for each plan. A plan can amend a filing, and an amended filing replaces the earlier one at the next update. Source of the figures: the Form 5500 datasets, filings received through .

How the figures were made

The figure is the cash from employers on Schedule H line 2a(1)(A). The site divides it by the active participants at the end of the plan year. Form 5500 does not state the match formula.

A state needs 50 plans or more with the figure to appear. A plan is in the state of the address of its sponsor. A zero on the line counts as zero, and a blank line gives no figure.
