About My Plan Facts
My Plan Facts publishes the annual report of every employer retirement plan in the United States with 100 or more participants: 72,371 401(k), 403(b), profit-sharing, ESOP and pension plans, as filed on Form 5500 with the Department of Labor. Each plan's assets, participants, contributions, fees and service providers are shown beside the medians for plans of the same size, the same industry and the same type, with every plan year from 2009.
What it is for
Form 5500 is public, but the government's search tool returns one scanned filing at a time and offers no comparison. Employees checking their plan, job seekers comparing benefits, plan sponsors benchmarking their own plan, and advisers and providers researching the market all need the same thing: the figure, and something to hold it against. This site computes the per-participant measures, the peer medians and percentiles, and the year-by-year series that the raw files do not contain.
What it leaves out
- People. Form 5500 names plan administrators, signers, preparers and, on Schedule C, individual trustees and employees. This site publishes organisations only, and plans whose sponsor is an individual or a practice named for one are left out altogether.
- Individual accounts. No balance, contribution or name of any participant exists in the source data, and none appears here.
- Advice and ratings. The site explains what each measure is and where a plan sits among its peers. It does not grade plans, and it does not tell anyone what to do with their savings.
- Small plans. Plans with fewer than 100 participants file a short form without fee schedules; they are counted in state and industry totals and have no pages.
Who publishes it
My Plan Facts is an independent public-data reference site. It is not affiliated with the Department of Labor, the Internal Revenue Service, any employer, or any plan provider. It is free to use and funded by advertising that is clearly labelled. Advertisers have no influence over which plans appear or how their figures are presented. Sponsor placements on state pages, when present, are marked "Sponsored"; plan pages carry none.
Updates and corrections
The site is rebuilt daily from the current Department of Labor files, which the department refreshes monthly; filings received through the date in the page footer are included. Where a figure here differs from the filing at EFAST2, the filing is authoritative. See corrections, the methodology and the contact page.
